Can Foreigners Buy Agricultural Land in Turkey?

The issue of foreigners purchasing agricultural land in Turkey has changed with the new legal regulations that entered into force in 2022. First of all, it should be noted that the purchase of agricultural land in Turkey is regulated by taking into account factors such as national security, national agricultural policies and rural development.

The purchase of agricultural land by foreign natural and legal persons is limited to the rights granted to Turkish citizens. In other words, foreigners are generally not allowed to purchase agricultural land. However, there are some exceptions. Foreigners may acquire agricultural land within the scope of their agricultural production activities in Turkey if they fulfill certain conditions.

One of these exceptions is that foreigners are allowed to lease land for agricultural production activities in Turkey. Foreign real and legal persons have the same leasing rights as Turkish citizens. However, there may be some restrictions on lease periods and other details.

Another exception is the rights granted to foreign natural persons who are married to a Turkish citizen. Foreigners married to Turkish citizens can acquire agricultural land through their spouses.

In addition to the exceptions mentioned above, some other conditions and restrictions may also apply to the acquisition of agricultural land by foreign natural and legal persons. Therefore, it is important for foreigners wishing to purchase agricultural land to closely follow the relevant legislation and applicable regulations and apply to the authorities to obtain the necessary permits.

For more details and up-to-date information, it is recommended that you contact the relevant public institutions in Turkey or seek professional advice from a lawyer.
